These items came to the Library of Virginia in transfer of court papers from Mathews County.

Historical Information

Mathews County was named for Thomas Mathews, of Norfolk, the Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1790 when the county was formed from Gloucester County.

Most records were burned in Richmond on 3 April 1865, where they had been moved for safekeeping during the Civil War.

Scope and Content

Mathews County (Va.) Road and Bridge Records, 1861-1906, consist of the following records: Claims, 1861-1866, 1887-1903; Orders, 1867-1893; Overseer of the Road/Surveyor Appointments and Resignations, 1883-1898; Road Fines, 1889; Road Petitions and Applications, 1865-1904; and Road Reports, 1880-1906.
