Historical Information

Amherst County was named for Major General Jeffery Amherst, British commander in North America during the latter part of the French and Indian War and governor of Virginia from 1759 to 1768. It was formed from Albemarle County in 1761. Islands in the Fluvanna (now the James) River were added in 1770.

Scope and Content

Unidentified Farm Account Book, 1848-1879 (bulk 1868-1879), records individual accounts of farm laborers. Enries include name of farm laborer, dates of transactions, goods purchased, quantity of goods purchased, amount owed, method of payment, and amount paid. Goods purchased include corn, flour, clothing, and salt. Method of payment was predominantly by labor on the farm. Members of Morris family are prominent in account book.
