Historical Information

Greene County was named for Nathanael Greene, American commander of the Army of the South in the Revolutionary War. It was formed from Orange County in 1838.

Scope and Content

Greene County (Va.) Tax Receipt and Memorandum Books of Dr. Joseph Smith, 1868-1874. The receipt book is a bound volume of receipts for taxes received by Joseph Smith in 1869. The volume also contains fragmentary notes, in the front covers and on two loose papers, pertaining to county court business. Included is a list of witnesses called for a grand jury. The memorandum book is a pocket memo book with handwritten notes and accounts, 1868-1874, and printed advertisements for commercial medicines marketed by R.V. Pierce, M.D., of Buffalo, New York.
