This item came to the Library of Virginia in shipments of court papers from Louisa County.

Historical Information

H.J. Parrish and Brother was a mercantile partnership formed by H.J. Parrish and T.J. Parrish in 1872. It conducted business in Fredericks Hall, Virginia, until the partnership dissolved in before 1881.

The account book was used as an exhibit in the chancery suit E.A. Saunders for others versus H.J. Parrish, etc., heard in the Louisa County Circuit Court.

Scope and Content

H.J. Parrish and Brother Account Books, 1872-1880, records the accounts of individual customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order. Information recorded in each account includes name of customer, dates of transaction, items purchased, quantity of items purchased, price of each item, form of payment, amount owed, and amount paid. Items sold include candy, food, alcoholic drinks, soda, cigars, dry-goods, coffee, toiletries, and clothing. Payments made by cash and credit.
