Historical Information

Tazewell County was named for Henry Tazewell, U.S. senator from Virginia from 1794 until his death in 1799. It was formed from Wythe and Russell Counties in 1799. Parts of Russell County were added in 1807 and 1835, parts of Washington and Wythe Counties were added in 1826, and part of Logan County (West Virginia) was added in 1834.

The 1870 Virginia Constitution required that each county in the state be divided into no less than three townships (see Article VII, section 2). Based on the New England administrative organization of a county, each township would elect the administration officials for the offices of supervisor, clerk, assessor, collector, commissioner of the roads, overseer of the poor, justice of the peace, and constable. The supervisors of each township would comprise the board of supervisors for the county, and would be responsible for auditing the county accounts, examining the assessors' books, regulating property valuation, and fixing the county levies. The Acts of Assembly provided that each township be divided into school and electoral districts (see Acts of Assembly 1869-1870, Chapter 39). A constitutional amendment in 1874 changed the townships into magisterial districts and each district elected one supervisor, three justices of the peace, one constable, and one overseer of the poor. The supervisors of the districts made up the county board of supervisors whose duties were identical as those set out in 1870. The published Acts of Assembly appended a list of township names by county following the acts for every year that townships existed in Virginia.

Scope and Content

Tazewell County (Va.) Township Records, 1870-1875, consist of four volumes of minutes and accounts relating to the administrative functions of the township boards of the county.

Clear Fork Township Order Book, 1870-1875, consists of minutes and accounts. Information recorded includes division of the township into road districts, appointment and election of road overseers, accounts allowed against the township, setting of elections, the setting of tax and levy rates, appointment of election judges, road commissioner reports, settlement of treasurer's accounts, and overseer of the poor accounts including amounts paid to specific named individuals for specific services which are also given.

Clear Fork Township Ledger, 1870-1875, contains a variety of financial lists including township taxes placed in the hands of the township collector for collection, warrants drawn against the township, and receipt of tax tickets taken from the assessor's books. The lists of taxes are in alphabetical order by surname; the warrants lists are in warrant number order. Following these lists on pages 84-86 are a Board of Supervisors' Account Book, 1890-1891. Information recorded concerns Tazewell County in account as of 1891 with the late treasurer C. W. Greever for the 1890 county levy, 1890 road levies, and 1890 school levies.

Jeffersonville Township Board Minutes, 1870-1872, contains minutes and accounts. Information recorded includes division of the township into road districts, appointment of election commissioners, claims allowed against the township, setting rates allowable for road work, road overseer election results, setting of tax and levy rates, lists of claims for the years 1870-1871, list of tax tickets turned over to the collector for 1871, account with the overseer of the poor, overseer of the poor orders for 1872, and township taxes received for 1871.

Jeffersonville Township Ledger, 1870-1874, consist of lists from the township collector and treasurer of taxes, warrants, and overseer of the poor accounts. There is an index at the front of the volume that tells which lists are found on which pages.
