These items came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court papers from Giles County under the accession number 45263.

Historical Information

Giles County was named for William Branch Giles, United States senator from Virginia, in 1806. It was formed from Montgomery, Monroe (West Virginia), and Tazewell Counties. Part of Wythe County was added in 1808, parts of Tazewell County were added in 1826 and 1836, part of Monroe County was added in 1829, parts of Mercer (West Virginia) County were added in 1840-1841, and part of Craig County was added in 1858.

Scope and Content

Giles County (Va.) Judgments, 1870-1912, consist of judgment cases and other court papers. The collection includes county court judgments, 1873-1904; circuit court judgments, 1870-1912; and circuit court confessed judgments, 1881-1891.

Judgments consist primarily of common law suits but interfiled are other court papers such as criminal causes, fiduciary records, jury records, tax and fiscal records, marriage records, bonds, deeds, wills, and other court papers. Not every record type will be found in every bundle of papers.
