Acquisition Information

These items came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court papers from Giles County under the accession number 45263. These items were purchased at auction by the judge of Giles County on an unknown date.

Historical Information

Giles County was named for William Branch Giles, United States senator from Virginia, in 1806. It was formed from Montgomery, Monroe (West Virginia), and Tazewell Counties. Part of Wythe County was added in 1808, parts of Tazewell County were added in 1826 and 1836, part of Monroe County was added in 1829, parts of Mercer (West Virginia) County were added in 1840-1841, and part of Craig County was added in 1858.

Giles County (Va.) Court Papers, 1866-1902, consist of Board of Supervisors records (1870); bonds/commissions/oaths (1876); clerk's correspondence (1875); judgments (1867-1879); accounts that cannot be matched with cases (undated); jury records (1879); one page from a Justice's Judgment and Execution Book (1901-1902 ca.); fiduciary records (1876; 1880); a deed (1879); organization records (1866); Overseer of the Poor records (1883); and miscellaneous records including a mechanics lien (1879) and a power of attorney (1879).
