Historical Information

Amherst County was named for Major Jeffery Amherst, British commander in North America during the French and Indian War and governor of Virginia from 1759 to 1768. It was formed from Albemarle County in 1761.

Scope and Content

Amherst County (Va.) Free Negro and Slave Records, 1817-1820, consist of aphotocopy of an order dated 1817 to sell a slave by the name of Berry belonging to the estate of Benjamin Palmer and an original slave patrol commission from 1826 January for Robert Gill to form a patrol to serve for thirty days. Members of the citizens summoned to be on the patrol are given.
