Acquisition Information

This item came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court papers from the city of Richmond Department of Parks and Recreation under the accession number 43786.

Historical Information

Richmond was established in 1742 and incorporated as a city in 1842. The city of Manchester was annexed in 1910; Barton Heights, Fairmont, and Highland Park in 1914; and part of Chesterfield County in 1970.

Scope and Content

Richmond (Va.) List of Colored Voters Registered at Second Precinct in Jackson Ward, 1896-1902, contains a partial list of registered male African American voters (surnames I-Y) for the second precinct in Jackson Ward in the city of Richmond. The information recorded includes the date registered, registration number, full name, "has he been sworn," age in years, occupation, residence, length of residence in city, length of residence in state, and a section about naturalization which was used to record notes about other districts a registration was transferred to or from.
