Northumberland County probably was named for the English county. It was formed about 1645 from the district of Chickacoan, the early-seventeenth-century name for the region between the Potomac and the Rappahannock rivers.
Northumberland County (Va.) Land Records, circa 1834-1915 consist of a petition to establish a boundry line (1915), a petition to establish a mill (1837), a petition for oyster planting grounds (1896), and three plats (1834, 1886, 1899).
