This item came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Charles City County.
Historical Information
Charles City County was an original shire formed in 1634.
Records have been destroyed at various times. The most damage occurred during the Civil War when the records were strewn through the woods in a rainstorm. A few pre-Civil War volumes such as deed books, will books, minute books, and order books exist.
The deed, will and order book of Charles City County in this collection was created by the County Court.
Scope and Content
Deed Book, 1655-1665, of Charles City County Court. The deed book records the name of the grantor and grantee, the residence of both individuals and the description of property being sold or transferred. The volume has an index which contains the first and last names of both parties. It is arranged alphabetically from A-Z.
Order Book, 1655-1665, of Charles City County Court. The order book records all matters brought before the court when it was in session. It provides a synopses of cases in a neater, more organized form. The volumes are sometimes internally indexed; more rarely, there is a book including: deeds, chancery causes, judgments, records of legal disputes heard before the county court and road ordres. The volume has an index.
Will Book, 1655-1665, of Charles City County Court. The will book includes the name of testator, list of heirs and year the wills were proven in court and probate records such as inventories and appraisements. The will book has an index.
