Acquisition Information

These items came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer from the city of Richmond and the former chair of the Civil War Centennial Committee under the accession number 27668. Formerly called Civil War Centennial Commission records.

Historical Information

The Richmond Civil War Centennial Committee was created in 1958 as one of many local counterparts to the statewide Virginia Civil War Centennial Commission. With input from the state commission, chairman J. Ambler Johnston and his staff helped celebrate Richmond's involvement in the Civil War, 1861-1865. These celebrations included several events throughout the years of the committee's existence in addition to producing a number of publications dealing with topics specific to the Richmond area. However, institutions all over the state, as well as the country, requested these publications for their own educational uses. In 1965, the Richmond Civil War Centennial Committee closed, having completed its objective of promoting Richmond's history during the Civil War years.

Scope and Content

Richmond (Va.) Civil War Centennial Committee Records, circa 1956-1965, contain correspondence with the committee, including some internal correspondence; projects undertaken by the committee, including publication of Richmond City Council minutes from the war years; various publications produced by the committee and research files relating to those publications; photographs, both originals and copies from other institutions; and maps related to the Civil War. The committee project records are arranged alphabetically by the name of the project; general correspondence files are arranged alphabetically by the name of the person or institution with whom the committee is corresponding; personal correspondence with the Committee Chairman is arranged chronological.
