These items came to the Library of Virginia in transfer of court papers from the city of Chesapeake.

Historical Information

Norfolk County (extinct) probably was named by Adam Thoroughgood, a local resident, from his native county in England. It was formed from Lower Norfolk County in 1691. Norfolk County became extinct in 1963, when it was consolidated with the city of South Norfolk to form the city of Chesapeake. The county seat was Portsmouth.

Scope and Content

Norfolk County (Va.) Road and Bridge Records, 1719-1925, consist of the following records: road petitions include orders, reports, and plats if filed with petitions; road applications; road reports include orders if filed with reports and commissioner's reports; road orders not filed with reports or petitions; road accounts include payments and claims; road overseer records include papers related to overseers, viewers, and surveyors such as petitions, applications, orders, communication to courts, appointments, resignations, and bonds; road hand records; medical excuses from road work; jury records related to roads; miscellaneous road records include orders of publication, court correspondence related to roads, writs of ad quod damnum, petitions for writs of mandamus, builder's bonds, plats, receipts, summons, contracts, road commissioner appointments, petitions for road trustees, road fines collected, board of supervisor papers related to roads, turnpike and drawbridge company papers; bridge records include petitions, memorials, communication from bridge companies, commissioner's reports, papers relating to causeways, papers relating to mill dams, reports, and orders; ferry records include petitions; orders; reports; leases and contracts; accounts; appraisements; papers related to Federal interests in ferry operations; receipts; communication from agents, superintendents, ferry committee, neighboring localities; drain records include various records relating to drain requests; and dock, wharf, landing, and harbor records.
