Historical Information

Princess Anne County was formed in 1691 from Lower Norfolk County. Now extinct, it was incorporated into the city of Virginia Beach in 1963.

Scope and Content

Princess Anne County (Va.) List of Freed Negroes, 1864, records the date, full name, age, eye color, hair color, complexion, height, occupation, where from (state and county), present residence, and remarks. Many of the remarks note that the person is a deserter from the "Rebel Army" or has "gone North." Many others are listed as having left Virginia for cities such as St. Louis, Washington, DC, Baltimore, and New York. Many of those listed are originally from counties other than Princess Anne and from states other than Virginia. There is no index.
