Nelson County (Va.) was named for Thomas Nelson, Jr., governor of Virginia from June to November 1781. It was formed in 1807 from Amherst County.
Nelson County (Va.) Land Grants, 1828-1854. The collection contains nine land grants, as follows: to John Gray, 1828 Nov. 29; to William W. Campbell, 1833 Dec. 3; to Edward and Thomas Massie, 1834 Nov. 13; to James W. Campbell, 1835 May 7; to Mayo Cabell, 1835 Feb. 23; to Ryland Rodes, 1854 Jan. 2; to Albert G. Loving, 1852 July 20; to Washington Campbell, 1854 Oct. 2; and to Ryland Rodes, 1854 Jan. 2.
