Historical Information
Berkeley County (West) Virginia was named in honor of Norborne Berkeley, baron de Botetourt, for whom Botetourt County was also named. It was created from Frederick County in 1772. Berkeley County was one of the fifty western Virginia counties to form the state of West Virginia in 1863.
Scope and Content
Berkeley County (West) Virginia Deed and Land Grants, 1797-1861. The collection contains one deed and 4 land grants, as follows: a land grant to John Blake, 1860 Apr. 13; a land grant to Henry Barns, 1847 Apr. 15; a land grant to Thomas Willson, 1826 Aug. 16; a land grant to Thomas Bryerly, 1812 May 13; and a deed between Phillip Pendleton and wife and John James Maund, 1796 Oct. 24.
