Historical Information

Amherst County was named for Major General Jeffery Amherst, British commander in North America during the later part of the French and Indian War and governor of Virginia from 1759 to 1768. It was formed from Albemarle County in 1761.

Scope and Content

Amherst County (Va.) Deeds, 1768-1863. The collection contains six deeds, as follows: a deed between Charles Rose and Robert Rose and Hugh Rose conveying a mill on Pyney River, 1782 Aug. 5; a deed between Daniel Warwick, John M. Warwick, Corbin Warwick, Abram Warwick, James Warwick, and Thomas W. McCance on the first part, James Galt and William Barksdale on the second part, and Julia A. Warwick and Joseph Trent Warwick on the third part, 1858 Oct. 8; a deed between Edward Penn to Thomas Crews and John Camm, 1809 June 22; a deed between Lunsford Lomax and Richard Pritchard, 1768 Sept. 12; a deed between Hugh Rose and Charles Irving, 1775 Aug. 7; and a deed between Lunsford Lomax and William Loveday 1769 Apr. 7.
