Historical Information

The Richmond Jaycees were founded on 15 May 1936 by a group of fifty men who came together as charter members. Originally known as the Richmond Junior Board of Trade, the organization was incorporated 3 September 1940. By 1945 the Richmond Chamber of Commerce commended the Richmond Junior Board of Trade for its work and suggested that the organization change its name to the Junior Chamber of Commerce in order to conform to the national organization's name. The new title of Junior Chamber of Commerce became official on 28 June 1946. The group again changed its name in 1969, to the Richmond Jaycees. Initially created as a group for young, male professionals it would not be until after a 1984 Minnesota court case that the United States Jaycees allowed females to become members of the organization.

Scope and Content

Records, 1936-2006, of the Richmond Jaycees, a volunteer, civic-based organization located in Richmond, Virginia. The records include agendas, bylaws, clippings, correspondence, financial records, manuals, membership applications and rosters, minutes, newsletters, photographs, and reports. Of interest are the Project files (Series III), that detail the Richmond Jaycees' extensive charity work, including such projects as the Special Olympics and Little Santa Christmas Party for underprivileged children; public outreach programs such as helping the elderly and Get-out-the-vote campaigns; community-related projects such as the Richmond Christmas Parade; and fund raising projects such as an annual Christmas tree sale. The collection also includes numerous photographs of members, volunteer and social events.

Of note is the correspondence of several Richmond Jaycees presidents, 1981-1994. Also included are membership applications and activities records, 1938-1990, which are closed due to privacy protected information (Boxes 12-18).
