Scope and Content

Westmoreland County (Va.) Public Buildings and Grounds, 1811-1912 and undated. The materials consist of reports, bills, proposals, orders and correspondence related to the courthouse, clerk's office, jail and other county buildings. Included are bills and correspondence for repairing and fireproofing the clerk's office, 1822-1900; contracts for constructing the courthouse, 1824-1848; bills, commissions, and reports related to the jail, 1811-1832; jail inspectors' reports, 1810-1912, undated; and sundry materials covering the time period 1821 through 1905, and concern a portraits of Lord Chatham and George Washington, landscaping the public square, preparation of a stone monument to Washington, and a petition for a bell.

Of note is a small drawing of the proposed jail, 1825-1826. The sketch describes a two-story structure with a central staircase and gabled roof. The hand colored drawing shows thick, presumably masonry, walls and describes the dimensions of each room and the overall structure.
