Portsmouth was established in 1752. It was incorporated as a town in 1836 and as a city in 1858.
Scope and Content
Portsmouth (Va.) Request by the Commissioners of Schools to Have Property Conveyed to Them, October 15, 1860. Consists of a copy of Board of Public School Commissioners minutes documenting a motion and an order that the Chairman of the Board make application to the Common Council of the City of Portsmouth to convey all property held by them for the use of the public schools of Portsmouth, and that the Chairman then execute a deed for the property from the Merchants and Mechanics Savings Bank of Portsmouth to the Commissioners of Schools.
