Rockbridge County was formed in 1778 from Augusta and Botetourt Counties. An additional part of Botetourt County was added in 1785.
Rockbridge County (Va.) Slave Patrol Appointment, May 7, 1861. Consists of a document appointing William Allison, Joseph Saville, and William S. Newcomer to patrol at least once a week "all negro quarters" and other places suspected of harboring "unlawful assemblages of slaves as may stroll from one plantation to another."
