The Robert Alonzo Brock Collection was filmed by The Huntington Library in cooperation with The Library of Virginia with funding provided by The Library of Virginia Foundation with the support of The Roller- Bottimore Foundation and The Robins Foundation. Microfilm received 15 April 2004.

Historical Information

Stafford County was named for the English county. It was formed from Westmoreland County in 1664. Part of King George County was added in 1777. The county seat is Stafford.

Many pre-Civil War court records were lost to vandalism by Union troops during the Civil War. A few volumes that record deeds, court orders, and wills exist.

Scope and Content

Stafford County (Va.) Circuit Court Records, 1747-1804, consists of miscellaneous court records, fiduciary records, and wills.

Court records include executions related to judgment suits, an order and commissioners' report (1772) in the chancery suit Bryan Chadwell and wife and others versus William Murphy and others, an order (1776) for a deposition in the suit William Bronaugh versus Mary Doniphan, and other miscellanous documents.

Fiduciary records include an administrator's bond (1754) granted to Katherine Smith to administrate the estate of John Smith, an estate inventory of John Gray (1767), and an appraisement of the estate of Thomas Pratt (1766.)
