Historical Information

Alleghany County was formed in 1822 from Bath, Botetourt, and Monroe (West Virginia) counties. An additional part of Bath was added in 1823 and an additional part of Monroe in 1843.

An act passed by the Virginia legislature in 1803 required every free negro or mulatto to be registered and numbered in a book to be kept by the county clerk.
