Scope and Content

Bedford County (Va.) Public Buildings and Grounds, 1764-1840 and undated. The materials consist of reports, orders, a survey, specifications, and architectural renderings for various county buildings created over a period of years at the behest of the Bedford County justices. Included is a bill for work on the courthouse from H. G. Hughes, undated; an undated plan and specifications for the new jail in the Town of Liberty; a plat of the prison boundaries in New London, 1764; an architectural drawing and specifications for a courthouse building, 1785; an order and specifications for a new clerk's office, 1828; and an order creating a committee to inspect the jail, 1840.

The most noteworthy document is the 1785 architectural rendering of the courthouse. This unique fold-down plan two-dimensionally illustrates the floor plan, walls, roof, and chimney of the proposed structure. The drawing is unsigned so the delineator is not known.
