This item came to the Library of Virginia in shipments of court papers from Prince Edward County.

Historical Information

Brightwell and Davis was a partnership composed of Josiah W. Brightwell and E.P. Davis. They operated a flour mill from 1859 to 1865 in the town of Farmville located in Prince Edward County, Virginia.

The account book was used as an exhibit in the chancery suit Henry B. Brightwell and others versus E.P. Davis and others heard in the Prince Edward County Circuit Court.

Scope and Content

Brightwell and Davis Journal, 1859-1866, records the accounts of individual customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order. Information found in each entry include date of transaction, service rendered, quantity purchased, cost per bushel, barrel, or pound, amount owed, form of payment, and amount paid. Journal includes an index listing customers' names in alphabetical order and the page number their accounts can be found. Payments made by cash, credit, and barter of items such as barrels.
