Biographical Information

Joseph Hatchitt Crooks was born on 21 September 1908 in Manchester, Virginia. He was the son of William B. Crooks (1866-1951) and Cornelia Hatchitt Farley (1870-1957). He died in Richmond, Virginia on 31 July 2007, and is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Scope and Content

Papers, 1937-1997, of Joseph H. Crooks (1908-2007) of Richmond, Virginia, including his genealogical research files on the Crooks, Ellington, Farley, Fowlkes, Gills, Hatchitt, and Owings families of Amelia, Chesterfield, Lunenburg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward Counties, Virginia, and Baltimore County, Maryland. The files include family group sheets, and notebooks with abstracts from court records, including deed books, order books, will books and marriage records, as well as published sources. There are also two groups of card files.

Crooks compiled his research into a unpublished work entitled, "The Children and Grand-Children of the Forebearers of the Crooks Family of Manchester, Virginia, 1635-1985." He used a particular numbering system in his research, and a key can be found in the first folder. This system was used by Crooks to organize his files. The researcher should consult the key in order to assist them in the use of the collection.
