William Selden was born 31 January 1791 in Henrico County, Virginia, to Miles Selden (1752-1811) and Elizabeth Armistead Selden (1752-1833). He was a member for Henrico County in the House of Delegates from 1813 to 1816 and from 1818 to 1821. He later served as Registrar of the Land Office. Selden also served as the Treasurer of the United States from 1839 to 1850. He married first Maria Eliza Swann (d. 1834) 26 November 1833, and they had one child. He married second Emily Hunter 9 June 1840, and they had eight children. Selden died 7 April 1874.
Accounts, 1811-1833, kept by William Selden (1791-1874) of Henrico County, Virginia, consisting of a) account book containing the accounts, 1811-1818, of the estate of Miles Selden (1752-1811) of Henrico County, kept by Miles Selden of Prince George County, Virginia, and by William Selden, accounts, 1814-1818, of the estate of Miles Selden (1777-1814) of Prince George County, kept by William Selden, and accounts, 1813-1833, of the estate of Nathaniel Selden (d. ca. 1813) of Henrico and Powhatan Counties kept by William Selden, and keeping track of sales of land, slaves, and livestock; b) receipt, 12 July 1819, from Lainier and Rochelle to Bolling New for payment of account for estate of Miles Selden; and c) account of Thomas Nelson with the estate of Nathaniel Selden for medical visits to slaves of the estate, paid 7 January 1827.
