Biographical/Historical Information

Richard Blow (1746-1833) was the son of Samuel and Martha Blow of Portsmouth, Virginia. He served at various times as a trustee of the town of Portsmouth, a justice of the Norfolk County court, director and president of the Dismal Swamp Canal Company, and president of the Farmer's Bank of Norfolk. He was a prominent tobacco merchant and operated branch stores in Southampton and Sussex counties, where he owned large plantations.

Receipt book, 1784-1814, of Richard Blow of Sussex County and Portsmouth, Virginia. Included are receipts for money delivered or received for freight charges, payment of notes, hire of slaves, and work performed on various vessels belonging to Blow.
