Biographical/Historical Information

The Louisa Railroad Company was chartered by an act of the General Assembly of Virginia, passed February 18, 1836. Its line, built as a branch of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad, ran from Hanover Junction to Louisa Courthouse. The association with R.F.& P. ended in the late 1840s. In 1850 the name changed to Virginia Central Railraod, and in 1868 to Cheaspeake and Ohio Railraod.

Scope and Content Information

This accession consists of two parts: Accession 29294a, a minute book, 1850-1869, contains records of the meeting of the board of directors and stockholders. Additional subjets covered include statements on the financial condition of the company, appointment of agents, and reports on accident investigations. Information on operating the Railroad during the Civil War is also included. Accession 29294b, the executive letter book of the company's president Edmund Fontaine, 1846-1851, records both incoming and outgoing correspondence, concerning the company's relationship to the R.F.& P. and financial matters. Includes letter and drawing of rail specifications.
