Biographical/Historical Information

General John Cropper, Jr. (1755-1821) was a prominent resident of Accomack County, Virginia. He was a member and commander of the militia and fought in the Revolutionary War. He was a member of the Virginia House and Senate, owned plantations, a tidal mill, and a store, and was involved in other business ventures.

Scope and Content Information

Entries in this ledger reflect Cropper's involvement in various businesses. He was a partner in the firm of Custis and Cropper, which operated a merchant store, grain mill, and sawmill. Other entries relate to plantations and the settlement of estates. Accounts identify individuals by occupation, and include servants and numerous free Blacks.
