Biographical/Historical Information

Joshua Chaffin (1748-1824) served at various times as collector of taxes, sheriff, and court justice of Amelia County, Virginia. Chaffin also operated saw and grain mills in association with Joshua Atkinson and John Tinsley. By marriage Chaffin was realted to the Booker, Easley, and Jeter families of Amelia County.

Scope and Content Information

Included are three ledgers (1792-1804; 1794-1795; 1796-1818), relating to the operation of Chaffin's mill and tavern. The ledger for 1792-1803 includes a list for birth, death and sale of slaves, and inventories of goods and slaves given to female members of the household.
