Biographical/Historical Information

David Hunter was born 3 May 1761, in York, Pennsylvania. He moved with his family to what is now Berkeley County, West Virginia, some time before 1772. Hunter received his education at a log school house. During the 1780s, he served as deputy assistant clerk of court. After returning from a trip to England, Hunter married Elizabeth Pendleton (ca. 1774-1825) in 1792, and they had several children. Hunter became clerk of Berkeley County Court in 1803 and held the position until his death. He was a colonel in the Berkeley County militia. Hunter died 22 March 1829, and was buried in the Old German Lutheran Reformed Church cemetery.

Bill of sale, 11 June 1799, from Edward Mason and James Mason, Jr. (1775-1848), to David Hunter (1761-1829), all of Berkeley County, (West) Virginia, for Hunter's purchase of a female slave and her two sons for $410.
