A genealogist and writer, Paula Underwood Spencer lived in
Arlington, Virginia, and San Anselmo, California. She wrote
several works designed for educational use and based them on
Native-American oral traditions. She owned and operated the
Tribe of Two Presses, the Learning Way Center, and the Past is
Prologue Learning Way. She conducted extensive genealogy on
several families, including the Johnson and Elmore families.
Spencer died 1 December 2000 in Marin County, California.
Papers, 1974-2000, consisting of genealogical research, on
the following families: Elmore, Johnson, Kerns, Skidmore,
Cutler, Sutton, Saunders, Lindley, Fansler, Crews, Underwood,
Beem, Phares, Ellyson, and Coons, including those lines which
settled in Augusta, Henrico, and Rockingham Counties,
Virginia, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa,
Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina,
Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Records include: abstracts,
notes, memorandums, deeds, wills, marriage records, census
records, newsletters, obituaries, correspondence, articles,
reviews, portraits, photographs, greeting cards, lists,
transcripts, genealogical notes, surveys, land grants, maps,
and indexes.
