Auditor of Public Accounts, Colonization Board Vouchers, 1856-1858. Accession APA 110, State Records Collection, The Library of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia.
The Board of Colonization was created by an act of the General Assembly passed on 6 April 1853. The purpose of the board was to supervise the transportation of free black males to Liberia on a voluntary basis. To finance the operation of the act, a poll tax was levied on free black males. The board was composed of the Auditor of Public Accounts, the Second Auditor, and the Secretary of the Commonwealth. It ceased operation when the War between the States began.
These vouchers for the transportation of free negroes include the names of persons to whom money was owed, the amounts, and the date the voucher was mailed.
