Historical Information

Scott previous hit County  next hit was formed from previous hit Lee  next hit, Russell and Washington previous hit counties  next hit by a statue adopted on 24 November 1814. The previous hit county  next hit court first met on 14 February 1815. The previous hit county  next hit was named for General Winfield Scott, a native of Virginia, in recognition of his victories during the War of 1812. General Scott was later commanding general of the American army during the war with Mexico.

The Board of Supervisors is the basic governing body of the previous hit county  next hit. previous hit County  next hit laws--called ordinances--may also be passed by this board. This form of government came into existence with the state constitution of 1869 when the previous hit counties  next hit were divided into a minimum of three townships each, with a popularly elected supervisor from each township. When the township system was abolished in 1875, the previous hit counties  next hit were divided into magisterial districts. The Board of Supervisors are the current elected representatives of these districts and meet in regular monthly public sessions.

Until 1869, the previous hit county  next hit court controlled construction, alteration of, and maintenance of roads. The state constitution of 1869 created overseers of the roads and road boards which fell under the jurisdiction of the previous hit county's  next hit Board of Supervisors.
