Franconia, Virginia earned its name from William Fowle’s 191-acre farm called “Frankhonia Farm”. The farm was located at the present day intersection of Franconia Road and Fleet Drive. In 1871, Fowle’s son, Robert Rollins Fowle, sold a portion of the farm to the Alexandria & Fredericksburg Railway Company, later renamed the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad. The railroad erected a station on the site, named Franconia, which closed in 1952. The area saw an explosion in suburban development beginning in the 1950s.
The Franconia, Virginia Collection consists of a broadside dating from December 19th, 1922, advertising the sale of the late George Triplett’s personal property at his former home located on the “Flag Hill” tract in Franconia. Albert Edward Francis, who bought the property in July 1921, offered Triplett’s belongings for sale which consisted mostly of farm equipment. Subjects include the history of Franconia, Virginia.
