Historical and Biographical Information

Between 1973 and 1977, Jane K. Wall surveyed 96 church and family cemeteries in Fairfax County, Virginia. In the mid-1980s, the Fairfax Genealogical Society sought to update Wall’s survey by resurveying cemeteries, correcting errors, and adding cemeteries previously not recorded. The society recruited its members to walk through cemeteries and transcribe gravestones. They also assigned a Cemetery Project Publications Committee to publish a complete and updated survey. In order to ensure accuracy, the society compared and merged all of the data from Jane K. Wall’s cemetery survey, cemetery files from Fairfax County Public Library’s Virginia Room, and additional resurveying that they had undertaken. The result was a six volume set of books published between 1994 through 1999 entitled Fairfax County, Virginia Gravestones which contained transcriptions for over 330 burial locations.
