Biographical Information
Captain William Beatty, eldest son of Col. William Beatty of Frederick Co., Maryland, was born June 18, 1758. Early in 1776 he entered the army, and was appointed an Ensign in the Maryland Flying Camp. He served almost uninterruptedly throughout the war, having risen to the rank of Captain, until his death at the battle of Hobkirk's Hill, April 25, 1781. Capt. Beatty was never married.
Scope and Content
Letter written by 1st Lieutenant William Beatty to his father, Col. William Beatty. Beatty describes his arrival in Virginia and how he has found the state in an uproar. He continues to describe accounts from the Carolinas including the actions of Generals Cornwallis, Smallwood, and Sumter.
