Biographical/Historical Information

Greg and Cunningham, the partnership of Thomas Greg of Belfast and Waddel Cunningham of New York, were provisions agents. Newton and Gordon were wine merchants with offices in Madeira and London. The firm was the result of two Scotsmen, Francis Newton and William Gordon, who fled to Madeira after the failed Stuart cause. Mary Spratt Provoost Alexander continued the business ventures of her late husband, Samuel Provoost, and was continually known in some circles as Mrs. Provoost despite her subsequent marriage to James Alexander. Their son, William Alexander (also known as Lord Stirling) served as a copartner in the family business.

Scope and Content

Concerns shipments of wine and the troubles of doing business in New York at the onset of the American Revolution.
