Biographical/Historical Information

Jane and Mary Rose were the daughters of Gavin Lawson (1740-1806) and Susanna Rose Lawson (1749-1825). Gavin was a merchant in Falmouth, Va., and advertised in the Virginia Gazette. The Lawsons moved to Geneva, N. Y., in 1803. See portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Lawson by John Hesselius in the Department of Collections, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Scope and Content Information

Two music books including music by Handel and Piccini. Some of the titles are "Roslin Castle," the "Lass of Ladies Mill," "General Wayne March," and "Prince Charles March." One volume is inscribed on the front cover "Jane L. Rose Mary S. Rose, Rosehill, N. Y.," and inside the front cover "June 1831, Jane L. Rose, Rosehill, Fayette, N. Y." The second volume is inscribed on the front cover "J.L. Rose."
