Biographical Information

Rowland Horsely Bates (1787-1871) was a general business owner in the former Israel's Gap. His son, Edwin James (1812-1889), was the executor of his will and took over his father's debt and business dealings. Their family legacy exists today as Batesville, named after the Bates family for their contributions to the community.

Scope and Content

The Bates Family Papers includes numerous facets of the family, organized into personal and professional papers. The personal papers include pedigree and genealogical research, transcriptions of Rowland's last will and testament listing the race of individuals on the estate, letters and correspondences, and medical papers, while the professional papers include legal and insurance documents, freight bills, slave hire papers, and various collected advertisements. A photo album is included in a separate box.
