Abstract
Documents regarding the Hibbs family of Preston County, (West) Virginia and Union soldier Benjamin Hughes, who was a friend
of the family. Civil War material includes a document granting furlough to Hughes, and a letter from him to L.W. Hibbs. There
are also financial and legal documents, including land documents, tax records, and promissory notes, of transactions involving
William Hibbs and Laban W. Hibbs; and a group photograph of William Hibbs and family. Please see "Scope and Content Note"

Documents regarding the Hibbs family of Preston County, (West) Virginia and Union soldier Benjamin Hughes (ca. 1842-1923,
birth dates vary among sources), who was a friend of the family. Hughes was mustered on January 26, 1864 and served in the
3rd West Virginia Mounted Infantry, and Company D of the West Virginia 6th Cavalry. Civil War material includes a document
granting furlough to Hughes, and a letter from him to L. W. Hibbs. Hughes married Virginia Susan McCallister in 1872.
There are also financial and legal documents, including land documents, tax records, and promissory notes, of transactions
involving brothers William Hibbs (1832-1910) and Laban W. Hibbs (1834-1896); and a group photograph of William Hibbs and family.

to visit Independence, Preston County. The letter provides a description of Hughes' appearance and background and is signed
by Colonel David T. Hewes

A letter dated 12 November 1862 written by Benjamin F. Hughes from Camp Buchannon, Upshur County, (West) Virginia. The letter
is addressed to L.W. Hibbs and regards the history of slavery in America and the constitutionality of the the Confederacy.
This letter is incomplete; the rest of the original letter is located in a&m 3741/box 1/folder 2. Photocopies of the missing
pages have been placed within this folder
