Emerita professor from the University of Virginia School of Nursing (1970–2003) and the Virginia Commonwealth University.
Pediatric nurse practitioner with a long involvement in the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners; editor
of "Pediatric Nursing" and founding editor of "Nursing Economics." Two parts to this collection: 1) educational and professional
career, and 2) management of the University of Virginia School of nNursing Brodie Scholars fund for nurse practitioner and
doctoral students.
Barbara Hall Dunn, Ph.D., RN, CPNP, is a native of Winchester, Virginia. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at
Virginia Commonwealth University in 1970, and a Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Virginia in 1974. A decade
later she obtained a Doctorate from the School of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University, with a dissertation entitled:
"National Certification as a Performance Measure: Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, 1977-1982." Dr. Dunn has maintained a career-long
involvement with the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners since its organization in Chicago in 1973, serving
in numerous positions, including that of President from 1975 to 1978. Dr. Dunn edited the journal Pediatric Nursing and was the founding editor for Nursing Economics . She was a clinical faculty member of both the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University schools of nursing,
and at present serves as a policy consultant for issues relevant to nurse-practitioners.
The bulk of the Dunn Papers concerns the origination, maintenance, and activities of the Barbara Brodie Scholars program of
the University of Virginia School of Nursing. Named in honor of distinguished nursing scholar and University of Virginia faculty
member (1970-2003) Barbara Brodie, the Brodie Scholars endowment funds scholarships for nurse practitioner and doctoral students
at the University of Virginia. The program materials include advisory committee minutes, financial reports, newsletters, award
criteria, and scholarship recipient statements.
Also represented in the Dunn Papers are graduate program essays and other materials relative to Dunn's doctorate, as well
as a folder of miscellaneous items from Dunn's professional career. Promotional materials for the new journal Nursing Economics are included, as is a copy of a deposition by Dunn regarding the establishment and naming of the journal.
The Dunn Papers are divided among two manuscript boxes. The first box contains items from Dunn's educational and professional
career, arranged by subject, while the second box contains exclusively materials relative to the Brodie Scholars program and
Dr. Barbara Brodie, also arranged by subject heading.
