This ashtray was donated to the Longwood University Department of Alumni Relations in the early 1990s, by Kate Matherly Vargas. Two of Vargas' sisters attended the school, Frances Louise Matherly (entered in 1927) and Carrie Henery Matherly (entered in 1930). It is unknown when this collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.
The State Normal School for Women was the fourth iteration of the school that would eventually become Longwood University. Encompassing the years 1914 to 1924, this period was one in which the curriculum was expanded and both faculty and enrollment increased exponentially.
As well, several new buildings, all in the Jeffersonian brick style, were added to campus during these years.
This ashtray, which dates from 1914-1924, is composed of stamped brass. The bowl of the ashtray depicts The Rotunda, Grainger Hall, and White House Hall as seen from High Street. The rim of the ashtray is decorated with flowers and leaves. The words "State Normal School" and "Farmville, VA" are stamped on the bottom margin.
