These papers were given to the University of Virginia Library by Doris Chapman, Portland, Maine, on July 7, 1998.

Scope and Content Information

This collection consists of the bibliographic research of Doris V. Chapman, Portland, Maine, ca. 800 items (2 Hollinger boxes), 1973 and 1998, on the books and other material by Harriet Beecher Stowe, many of which are a part of the Clifton Waller Barrett Library of American Literature at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia.

The largest component of the research papers are bibliographical descriptions for each item, arranged alphabetically by title of the work (A through U are in Box 1; W titles are in Box 2); followed by bibliographical descriptions for biographies about Harriet Beecher Stowe, her contributions to other books and magazines, and related works, such as adaptations, music, poetry, etc. (these are in Box 2).

Other papers include catalog card entries for Harriet Beecher Stowe books in the Clifton Waller Barrett Library; notes on changes in collation; correspondence of Doris Chapman and Fredson Bowers, University of Virginia professor and author of Principles of Bibliographical Description, who examined and corrected her bibliographic work on the Harriet Beecher Stowe materials (ca. 1973); transcripts and bibliographical descriptions for some of the letters and manuscripts of Stowe found in the Clifton Waller Barrett Library of American Literature at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia; and a set of the Inter- Society Color Council National Bureau of Standards Color Name Charts (all found in Box 2).

Arrangement

Bibliographical descriptions for each item by Harriet Beecher Stowe are arranged alphabetically by title of the work (A through U are in Box 1; W titles are in Box 2). All other materials are in Box 2.
