Acquisition Information
These items were given to the Library by Mrs. Page Daniel of Jacksonville, Florida, through Ms. Susan Stein of "Monticello," Albemarle County, Virginia, on June 12, 1998.
Scope and Content Information
There is a letter dated February 11, 1815 from Thomas Jefferson, "Monticello," to William Caruthers, Lexington, Virginia, presenting his compliments to the recipient and "asks the favor of him to have the inclosed letter delivered to the officer it is addressed..." He also reveals that he left the letter open for Mr. Caruthers' perusal in order that he may explain it to the assessor and collector.
Two other undated items pertain to John Randolph of Roanoke. There is "A Portrait of John Randolph, Esq. Representative in Congress from Virginia in a letter from to his friend," written by an unknown correspondent, Washington City, to John W. Dennis, Roseo, Missouri. It describes in detail that appearance, qualities and temperament of John Randolph of Roanoke. There is also an engraving of Randolph.
