Biographical/Historical Information
There are six items, (1897-1929) 1966 and n.d., of Maria Ward Skelton Williams, daughter of John Langbourne (1831-1915) and Maria Ward (Skelton) Williams (1843-1929). On January 9, 1902, she married Lewis Catlett Williams (1875-1959). They had nine children: Maria; Lewis Catlett, Jr; Fielding Lewis; Peyton Randolph; John Page; Cyane Dandridge; Murat Willis; Armistead Dandridge; and, Richard Burwell.
Scope and Content Information
There are two bound volumes kept by Maria Ward Skelton Williams. There is a commonplace book, n.d., containing religious poems and quotations. The other item is a scrapbook, (1902-1929)1966, and n.d., containing correspondence, papers, photographs, and printed material pertaining to the Skelton and Williams families, and various topics such as gardening, religion, social matters, and women. There are numerous poems and quotes pertaining to religion, children, and other topics. Correspondence includes: a letter, December 12, 1955, from Maria Ward Skelton Williams to her son, Peyton Randolph Williams, concerning the scrapbook; a letter, June 15, 1903, from the University of Virginia, mentioning Col. Peters, the old Chancellor house, Major David, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Miss Lucille Nelson (daughter of R. P. Nelson of Culpeper), Gordonsville, Col. Miles, and the Board [of Visitors of the University]; and, miscellaneous letters and telegrams.
There are three bound volumes, the private journal and records of ministry, 1897 to 1923, kept by E. L. Goodwin, containing entries of pastoral visits as well as records of baptisms, marriages, burials, and confirmations, in Fairfax, Richmond, Ashland, and other areas of Virginia.
