Letter
  • Sidney Lanier to George Baugh Heckel
    1877 Mar 29
    ALS , 5 p.

[Says his delay in writing is due to his waiting for enough time to discuss fully Heckel's "poetic communication." Must continue to write despite poor health. Decries "art for art's sake." Praises Heckel for the ideas in his verse. Expresses philosophy that if a person feels he must be a poet or die, he should pursue poetry. A young poet should open his mind to everything he hears. Expresses interest in young artists. Invites him to write whenever he has questions.]
