Biographical Information

Arliss Jeanette Shaffer was born on 2 May 1921 in Ault, Colorado. She was the daughter of Joel Charles Shaffer and Bertha Melvina Nali. She graduated from Colorado State College of Education (now the University of Northern Colorado), and taught high school in Colorado, Washington, and Virginia. Shaffer married William Woodward Monk on 15 June 1947. They moved to Staunton, Virginia, and in 1954, moved back to Colorado and settled in Greeley, where her and her husband operated a piano tuning business. She was a co-founder of the Weld County Genealogical Society, and a charter member of the Weld County Historical Society, and was a member of various other genealogical and historical societies. Arliss S. Monk died on 27 February 2013, and is buried in Linn Grove Cemetery in Greeley, Colorado.

Scope and Content

Papers, 1973-2011, of Arliss Shaffer Monk (1921-2013) of Greeley, Colorado, containing genealogical research on the Barkham, Corbin, Eltonhead, Ijams, Jenings, Philips, and Waters families of Lancaster, Loudoun, Middlesex, and York Counties, Virginia, and Maryland and England. The collection includes correspondence and research notes, and abstracts, copies, and transcriptions of census records, church records, court records, deeds, estate administration records, tax records, tombstone inscriptions, vital statistics, and wills. There are also guidebooks to Bruton Parish churchyard in Williamsburg, Virginia, and Ripon Cathedral in North Yorkshire, England.
