Biographical Information
William Shannon (d. ca. 1834) was a physician in Greene County, Tennessee. John Easterly (b. 1785) of Grainger County, Tennessee was his brother-in-law. Shannon married Margaret Shannon (b. 1791). After his death, she married Gross Scruggs, and they moved to Hamilton County, Tennessee. William and Margaret Shannon's daughter Mary Shannon (b. 1817) married George Washington Bennett (b. 1813) and they had twelve children. Their second child, John Easterly Bennett (1838-1864) went to medical school in Savannah, Georgia, and began practicing in Gordon County, Georgia. A captain in the Confederate army, he died 5 December 1864. James McKendree Bennett, (1857-1922), the eleventh child, attended Red Clay Academy in Bradley County, Tennessee, and later opened a hardware store in Bradley County. Mary Alice Bennett (1860-1888), the twelth child, was an invalid. Floyd S. Bennett (1890-1969), son of James M. Bennett, attended Trinity College (now Duke University) in Durham, North Carolina, and later lived in Richmond, Virginia.

Papers, 1822-1909, of the Bennett family of Tennessee and Georgia, consisting of letters, 1822-1838, of John Easterly (b. ca. 1785) of Grainger County, Tennessee, concerning the medical practice of his brother-in-law William Shannon (d. 1834) of Greene County, Tennessee and news of the Easterly, Shannon, Scruggs, and Thompson families; letters, 1881, 1909, between members of the Bennett family containing family and personal news; receipt, certificate, and account, 1860-1861, regarding the medical practice of John Easterly Bennett (1838-1864) of Savannah and Gordon County, Georgia; Report card, 17 November 1876, of James McKendree Bennett (1857-1922) at Red Clay Academy, Bradley County, Tennessee; contract, 10 March 1877, for the rental of a horse by James M. Bennett.
